Happy Monday
On Friday afternoon I was sat at the breakfast table
with my brother Jay, both of us tapping away at our
Macs when he shared one of his victories with me.
I had just got back from day 4 of a 21 day Ayurvedic
massage treatment to help me heal my arthritic pain,
feeling much better already, can you imagine the next
17 sessions
Anyway, we’re sat tapping away at our Mac’s when
Jay said with a big smile filled with excitement….
“Oh, look at this, they wrote about me in this months
issue of Montessori International magazine”
I just thought I’d share a bit about what they said to
give you an idea of how my brother was able to
seize an ordinary moment in everyday school into
an extraordinary opportunity for a child to learn.
Please pass this newsletter onto all the parents you
know, it may just open new doors, small things
always make the big difference.
The moment that inspired a Montessori International
head teacher to write about my brother is below…..
How many times do we hold back questioning and really
take interest in what a child says?
Do we let the child take the lead or do we give children
opportunities and time for thinking?
“I wish I would stop asking all these questions” and
“It’s so difficult to always think on the spot how to word things”
were expressed by several teachers.
“How about having a visual reminder of sample sentences”
was one idea…..
The results can be truly inspiring.
Last week I overheard a child asking a teacher
“Can you draw me a bee?” The teacher (my brother)
paused, glanced at the wall displays, and then said:
“I wonder what you could use to draw a bee yourself.
What shape do you need? What colors do u need?
Let’s have a look at the insets for design.”
Within a few minutes the child had chosen the ellipse
inset, black and yellow pencils and started drawing a
bee all by herself. This was one of these most inspiring
moments where a teacher, trusting the child to work it
out herself, not interfering with her thinking yet giving
the right support at the right time, extended a child’s
ideas into creative problem solving.
As always I will ask you to spread the word…..
